National Famine Way
Third to Sixth class were invited to take part in the Famine Way Walk helping to bring the bronze shoes to Canada. Some of the children even got to hold them! We walked with people who had come from Strokestown and were walking on to the Genie Johnson in Dublin, following the canal route which many people would have travelled in Famine times on their way to board a coffin ship to travel to North America and Canada. Some of them had dressed up for the occasion in clothing similar to what would have been worn at the time.. We also walked with the Canadian Ambassador. A couple of our students were interviewed along the way and might be included in a film which is being made on the famine. We had a great time and are excited to welcome Anne-Marie into our classroom for a famine workshop in the near future.
